What "Learning from Every Query" Means
Learning from every query does not mean the system makes a major change after each interaction. It means every interaction contributes a small, incremental signal to the system's understanding of what is useful. Each query updates which memories have been recently accessed (recency signal), how often specific memories are retrieved (frequency signal), which entity connections are active (context signal), and whether retrieved memories were actually used in the model's response (quality signal).
These small signals compound over hundreds and thousands of interactions into significant improvements in retrieval quality. A memory that is retrieved 50 times and used 45 times is clearly valuable. A memory that is retrieved 50 times and used 3 times is clearly noise. The system learns this distinction automatically from the pattern of use, without anyone explicitly labeling memories as good or bad.
The Implicit Feedback Channel
Users do not need to rate results for the system to learn. The act of retrieving a memory and incorporating it into a response is implicit positive feedback. The act of retrieving a memory and ignoring it is implicit negative feedback. These implicit signals are available for every interaction, creating a dense feedback stream that explicit ratings (which most users never provide) cannot match.
Adaptive Recall captures this implicit feedback through ACT-R activation updates. Each retrieval event adds an access timestamp to the memory's history. The activation equation weights all timestamps by recency and frequency, so recent, frequent access produces high activation while old, rare access produces low activation. This happens on every query, for every memory involved, with zero user effort.
The density of implicit feedback is what makes per-query learning practical. If the system had to wait for explicit user ratings (provided in maybe 2-5% of interactions), it would need 20-50 times more interactions to learn the same things. Implicit feedback from access patterns is available for 100% of interactions, making the learning loop fast enough to produce visible improvements within days rather than months.
Types of Queries That Teach More
Not all queries are equally informative. Some queries produce strong learning signals, while others produce weak ones. Understanding the difference helps predict how quickly a system will improve for different use cases.
High-information queries are specific and have a clear "right answer." When a user asks "what database does the project use?" and the system retrieves the correct memory, the signal is strong: this memory is useful for this type of query. When the system retrieves the wrong memory, the signal is also strong: this memory is not useful here. Both outcomes update the system's understanding meaningfully.
Low-information queries are broad or exploratory. When a user asks "tell me about the project," many different memories could be relevant, and the system cannot easily distinguish which results were genuinely useful versus which were just acceptable. The learning signal per interaction is weaker, so the system needs more interactions to learn effective retrieval for broad queries.
Corrective queries are the most informative. When a user says "no, that's wrong, we switched to PostgreSQL last month," the system learns both that the old memory is outdated and that the correction is important. These interactions carry disproportionate learning value and should be captured explicitly when possible.
Learning vs Memorizing
There is an important distinction between the system learning which memories are useful (learning) and the system simply replaying what it saw before (memorizing). True learning generalizes: the system discovers that memories about database configurations are important for architecture questions, even when the specific memory and the specific question use different vocabulary. Memorizing does not generalize: the system only retrieves the exact memory it served last time for the exact same query.
Cognitive scoring systems like Adaptive Recall achieve generalization through spreading activation. When a query about "database performance" is processed, the entity graph activates related entities: the specific database name, the hosting provider, the ORM layer, the indexing strategy. Memories connected to any of these entities receive activation boosts, even if they do not contain the words "database performance." This graph-mediated generalization means the system learns broadly applicable retrieval patterns, not just query-to-memory mappings.
How to Verify the System Is Learning
Track retrieval quality metrics over time to verify that per-query learning is actually producing improvement. The most useful metrics are: mean reciprocal rank (MRR, the average position of the first useful result), precision at k (what fraction of the top k results are useful), and the memory utilization rate (what fraction of injected memories the model actually references in its response).
A system that is learning effectively shows gradual improvement in all three metrics over the first few weeks of use. MRR increases (the best result appears higher in the list). Precision at k increases (fewer irrelevant results in the top positions). Memory utilization increases (the model uses a higher fraction of injected context). If these metrics are flat or declining, the learning mechanism may not be receiving enough signal, or the signal it receives may not be translating into ranking improvements.
